14k Gold Ring
For my Mother’s birthday they had the entire clan over. My father was feeling a little nostalgic. He was remembering the treasures people used to put into birthday cakes. They would wrap coins and other little gifts into tinfoil and then bake them in the cake. When you ate your slice a cake you might be lucky and get a treasure. It was usually a coin.
As I was serving the cake Dad thought it would be a good idea to put his gift under Moms slice. He figured she would find the 14k gold ring and remember the treasure cakes as well. He gave her the slice and went back to the kitchen for more. He was not expecting Mom to take a bite out of her cake and then share with her three year old granddaughter. Sure enough the 14k gold ring ended up in her mouth. I am yelling, don’t swallow, and spit it out. Everyone else had no idea what I was yelling about because no one else knew about the ring. My niece obligingly spit her cake into my napkin. I opened it up to show everyone the chocolate covered 14k gold ring. I would say it was a surprise, but not the one my Dad wanted to give.
